LFT Test: Meaning, Parameters, and Cost in Delhi NCR

The liver is an essential and complex organ in the human body that performs many different jobs including metabolism, immunity, digestion, detoxification, and vitamin storage. It provides energy to nearly every organ in the body and interacts with the endocrine and gastrointestinal systems. Besides storing iron and copper, it also assists in hematology with clotting factors and protein synthesis. Moreover, Kupffer and pit cells in the liver act as a first line of defense against pathogens, providing immune surveillance and cytotoxicity.

The doctor may prescribe liver function tests (LFT) to assess the liver’s health and evaluate any damage. These tests find out certain proteins and enzymes in the blood which helps determine inflammation, damage, or diseases affeMost commonly used liver function tests:cting the liver, such as cirrhosis, fatty liver disease and hepatitis. For instance, while acute hepatitis is the sudden inflammation of the liver, chronic hepatitis happens when inflammation of the liver lasts longer than six months. The changes in LFT results can allow early detection of unsuspected problems and monitoring of known problems.

Most commonly used liver function tests:

Alanine Transaminase (ALT): The liver produces ALT enzyme in high amounts. ALT aids in metabolising amino acids and is essential for energy production in the body. Elevated levels of ALT in the blood may indicate liver damage.

Aspartate Transaminase (AST): This enzyme is found in large amounts in the liver, heart and muscles, and in lesser amounts in other tissues. Elevated levels of AST may indicate an injury to the liver.

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): This enzyme is found in higher quantities in the liver, bile ducts, and bone. Any deviation on the higher side from the normal value may indicate liver or bile duct damage.

Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT): This enzyme is found in large amounts in the liver, bile ducts, and pancreas. If the liver is injured or the bile duct is damaged, the GGT levels in the blood may rise significantly.

Total Protein: It determines the total protein levels in the blood, which include globulins and albumin. While albumin prevents fluid from leaking out of blood vessels, globulin is a vital part of the immune system.

Globulin: This protein aids the immune system to fight infections.

Albumin: This protein indicates how well the liver is synthesising the proteins required by the body. Low levels of albumin can be a sign of liver damage.

Prothrombin: This protein helps the blood clot. It indicates the time required for clot formation. Elevated prothrombin time can be a sign of liver damage.

Bilirubin: It is a yellow pigment that is formed during the breakdown of red blood cells. If the liver is damaged, bilirubin can leak into the blood and cause jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes). It can also come out in the urine, making it appear dark.

The cost of LFT test may depend on the type of diagnostic and pathology centre and its location.

Preparation

There are no preparations required for this test. However, your healthcare provider may advise you to stop taking some medications a day before the test. This is due to the fact that some medications may affect the test results. It is important to drink water before the test. A professional phlebotomist will take a sample of blood, usually from a vein in your arm. The sample will then be sent to a laboratory for testing.
